When you travel to Cozumel, Mexico, get ready to enjoy a trip to the "Island of Swallows," one of the more exciting and beautiful islands in the Caribbean. Since Jacques Cousteau claimed Cozumel to be one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world back in 1959, the island has become an extremely popular underwater tourism hotspot.

Geographically, Cozumel is a little over 30 miles offshore from Cancun. In 2005, two category-4 hurricanes, Hurricane Emily and Hurricane Wilma, hit Cozumel. The island was quickly repaired, and underwater damage to the marine life has not slowed the underwater tourist trade on the island. It is impossible to walk very far in San Miguel, the downtown center of Cozumel, without tripping over tour companies offering a range of diving or snorkeling excursions.

There are a handful of smaller Mayan ruins scattered around Cozumel. San Gervasio is the largest of these; visitors can also go to Castillo Real ("Royal Castle"), or try El Caracol, a place used by Mayans as an early warning site for approaching hurricanes.
