Austin, Texas is often lauded for its laid-back feel. While the third-fastest growing city from 2000-2006 may have that reputation, you quickly realize upon arriving at the Austin airport that, while laid-back, Austin is by no means slow or boring. In fact, there is something for everyone when you fly in on Northwest Airlines for an Austin vacation.
Though Austin is only the 4th largest city in Texas, behind Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, it is actually the 16th largest in the US. Everything must really be bigger in Texas, if population is any indication. A large portion of Austin’s population comes from the rather large university that sits in the heart of it – the University of Texas. Students swell the population, and then the graduates stay there to continue to contribute to the business and culture of the city.
Just as the University of Texas is at the heart of Austin, Austin is at the heart of Texas, both geographically and politically, as it rests right near the center of Texas on the Colorado River and is the state’s capital.
Being situated right on the Colorado River has plenty of advantages, including all the outdoor activities you’d expect on a river. Speaking of outdoor fun, there are tons of bike trails all through Austin, as well as several parks and nature preserves right nearby the downtown area. But if the outdoors and college scene aren’t your style, there is still plenty to do.
Dating back to Willie Nelson’s rise in the early 70s, Austin has had a reputable and lively music scene, and live music is never far during an Austin visit. Once you get to know the city a little, it’s clear why it has that “laid back” reputation – a college, a river, music, and lots of outdoor fun – you’re sure to find fun for you and your family when you travel to Austin.
