Changing or Redepositing SkyMiles® Awards
Cantabria, Spain

Frequently Asked Questions

SkyMiles award tickets are valid only for the person and itinerary for which they were issued. The following applies to domestic and international award itineraries:

If travel plans change prior to the travel start date, award tickets may be changed and reissued, or if no part of the award ticket has been used, the mileage may be redeposited to the original account.

For wholly unused and partially used award tickets, changes may be made for up to one year from the originally scheduled outbound flight.

Northwest Airlines® requires instant ticketing of award travel bookings. A credit card will be required at the time of booking or change to pay for any applicable fees and taxes. Miles may be redeposited back into the original account for no fee if the reservation is canceled prior to midnight the next day.

If it is decided that a different person will be traveling, the original itinerary must be canceled, the miles redeposited and a new travel itinerary booked for that person.

If someone other than the member is traveling on an award ticket and a change requires additional miles, only the member can request the change.

If the award ticket changes require additional mileage, the current award price levels will apply.

All fees are USD and nonrefundable.

Platinum Elite members are exempt from SkyMiles award ticket fees (not including taxes, government imposed fees, award travel fuel surcharges, the PerkChoice processing fee, or paper ticket fees).

Changes and Saturday-night Stay Restrictions

Effective January 15, 2009, Northwest will remove the Saturday-night stay restrictions on PerkSaverSM Award tickets.

If you booked your award ticket prior to January 15, 2009, and the award ticket is subject to a Saturday-night stay requirement, and a change to the itinerary causes the itinerary no longer to meet the restriction, the ticket cannot be revalidated. Below are the options available:

  • Prior to starting award travel, you may redeposit the ticket and, when the miles are available, redeem for a PerkPassSM Award. The SkyMiles administrative redeposit fee applies.
  • If you have already begun travel and want to return early (no longer meeting the Saturday-night stay requirement), the return portion of the ticket becomes invalid, and the miles cannot be redeposited. Your only option is to purchase a one-way ticket for the return portion of your travel.
