Transfer Miles Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I transfer SkyMiles® miles?  
Transfer Miles is an online program which allows SkyMiles members to transfer their miles from their SkyMiles account to any other SkyMiles member's account. Simply complete the Transfer Miles Recipient Information to begin a transaction. When prompted, enter the SkyMiles account number and name of the individual(s) to whom you wish to transfer your miles.

2. Which credit cards will you accept?  
Your Transfer Miles order can be charged to a valid Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Diners Club, JCB, UATP or American Express credit card. Your credit card must have a billing address in the 50 U.S., Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.

3. How many miles can I transfer to one SkyMiles member?

4. Can I transfer to as many people as I wish?  
You may transfer your miles to a maximum of four people in a single transaction. However you can complete as many transactions as desired.

5. Can I transfer as many miles as I wish in a calendar year?  
Any SkyMiles member may transfer up to 75,000 miles from his/her account in a calendar year. All Transfer Miles transactions are final and cannot be reversed or refunded.

6. What information about the recipient will I need to give them miles?  
You will need the recipient's SkyMiles number and name. Once you provide the recipient's information, the miles will post to the recipient's SkyMiles account within 24 hours.

7. How does the recipient receive the Transfer Miles I just sent to their account?  
When you enter the recipient's name and SkyMiles account number, the miles will be deposited into the member's account within 24 hours after you complete the transaction. If you supplied the recipient's e-mail address they will receive an e-mail notification of your generous transfer of miles. If you do not provide the recipient's e-mail address, you will need to advise them of your transfers.

8. How much does the transfer of SkyMiles miles cost?

Once a mileage transfer is requested and the credit card is charged, the fees and the Transfer Mile amounts are not refundable.

9. How many Transfer Miles may an individual SkyMiles member receive?  
A member may receive a maximum of 30,000 Transfer Miles per calendar year. The allowable transfer amount is a minimum of 5,000 miles and a maximum of 30,000 miles. Miles can only be transferred in increments of 1,000.

10. Is there a limit on the number of miles that may be transferred out of an account?  
A maximum of 75,000 miles may be transferred out of any SkyMiles account per calendar year.

11. May I transfer SkyMiles miles without knowing the recipient's SkyMiles account number?  
No. You will need to know the recipient's SkyMiles account number in to transfer miles into their account.

12. What if the recipient has already reached the 30,000-mile per year maximum?  
You will not be able to complete your transaction for any recipients that have already received 30,000 miles from the Transfer Miles program.

13. How can my recipient enroll in SkyMiles?  
Your recipient can enroll in SkyMiles online at nwa.com and immediately receive a SkyMiles account number. It's free to join.

14. How quickly can miles add up to free travel awards?  
SkyMiles miles can quickly add up to free travel awards. Free roundtrip travel within the United States is available for as few as 25,000 miles. To reach the 25,000 mile threshold faster, you can fly on Northwest or one of our many airline partners, get a SkyMiles Visa Card to earn miles for the dollars you charge, or purchase goods or services from one of our many SkyMiles partners. 15. Do transferred miles help my recipient or me qualify for SkyMiles Medallion status?  
No. Transferred SkyMiles miles do not count toward Elite status qualification.

16. Can I transfer miles if I live in Canada?  
Yes, the Mileage Transfer Program is available to Canadian residents. The transaction will be subject to applicable taxes.

17. Is my order secure and is the personal information I supply confidential?  
Your order is protected and personal information is treated confidentially in accordance with our Terms of Use & Privacy.

18. If I transfer miles, will there be award seats available for me to obtain?  
Award travel is dynamic and always changing. Northwest cannot guarantee availability. Travel to prime destinations during peak periods may require unrestricted inventory which requires additional miles to secure those seats.

19. If I am an Elite member do I still have to pay the US $25 processing fee?
